Conifer or softwood

One of the most popular materials in the production of floor stands is coniferous wood. You can choose either pine and fir 1st class boards or either eco or “Rustic” style pine and fir 2nd class boards. 

1. Pine and fir 1st class boards- planed boards, without splinters. The surface is soft, flat. It absorbs paint relatively little, so the wood texture shines through the paint after painting or staining.

2. Eco style pine/fir 2nd class boards – unplaned boards. Eco or “Rustic” style surface, uneven, a bit rough. Absorbs paint well, and has an ecological appearance. Using this material will save natural and labor resources in its preparation. Branch holes in the surface of the boards are permissible for this material.

3. Brushed or aged boards- brushed surface with polished soft wood tissue. In some cases, in order to get the look of old wood, special mechanical processing is performed, nail holes are made, and various small defects-effects are made. It is handmade with additional costs, so it is recommended to make only individual elements from this material. 

Hardwood – most popular hardwoods are oak, ash, birch and economic class hardwood- European alder

1. Alder 1st class boards – planed boards. Looks good naturally, without dyeing. One of the most popular low-cost hardwood materials. 

2. Alder 2nd class boards – unplaned boards without additional sanding. The surface has an uneven, rough, ecological appearance. Natural and labor resources are saved in its preparation. Branch holes in the surface of the boards are permissible and the boards tend to be slightly curved. 

An essential part of the production of our wooden floor stands is veneer or plywood leftovers. The use of scraps often reduces the price of the product and, of course, also saves material resources and protects nature.

Veneers are divided into 3 classes:

1. class – without branches
2. class – with branches and patches  
3. class – with black branches and hollows in the branches

Compared to cardboard stands, the main advantage of wooden floor stands is long service life. For example, if the average service life of a cardboard stand is 3 months, then it can be even 10 years for a wooden stand.

Compared to plastic stands, wooden floor stands are a natural element that will create an appropriate environment. PLANED OR NOT PLANED PLANKS FOR WOODEN STANDS

The use of planed or not planed planks is a common issue. The production of wooden stands depends on the product for which the stand is to be used.

The aesthetic requirements of the shop environment will help to decide whether or not to use planed wooden planks for the stand. Not planed planks will be more difficult to keep clean as the surface is not perfectly flat and dusting will be more difficult.

If the wooden stand is to be cleaned by more modern means, such as a vacuum cleaner, then it is safe to choose not planed planks, even more so if it suits your brand. It is worth recalling that non-planed planks are at least 30% cheaper than planed planks.

A common myth is that holding an unplaned plank in your hand risks biting the scabbard in your hand. The misconception is that if you pick up an not planed plank you will get injured.

In reality, this is not the case.

Only in such cases can a scabbard get into your hand:

• if the wooden plank is jagged and slides through the palm;
• the hand is deliberately rubbed against the plank.

Preventing the risk of scabs – Colorwood Latvia’s production of sustainable wooden stands and wooden crates is mainly made using un-planed planks. However, they are treated with sandpaper in the edges to minimise the risk of injury so that users of the product do not the scabbards in their hands.

Pros for planed planks:

• The smooth surface facilitates the maintenance of the wooden stand;
• They are more accurate in size and thus facilitate the assembly process;
• Production of wood planks – planing recycling produces wood chips from which fuel briquettes are produced;
• Planed planks are suitable for the use of fine parts.

Cons for planed plank:

• They are 30-50% more expensive than unplaned planks;
• Higher production resources are consumed in their processing;
• The painting process is more difficult and expensive if the plank needs to be coated with a covering paint;
• Lower durability compared to not planed planks due to their thinner construction.

The production of wooden stands is a relatively complex process, with manual labour accounting for between 30% and 80%. For this reason, wooden retail displays can be produced relatively quickly and customised to the customer’s requirements.
